AVANCE-EL PASO RECEIVES MORE THAN $20,000 FROM
EMPLOYEES OF THE EL PASO WATER UTILITIES
[EL PASO, TEXAS] (December 15, 2011) — AVANCE-El Paso announced today that it received $20,697 from fundraising efforts of employees of the El Paso Water Utilities. Throughout the year, fundraising events were held to raise money for the AVANCE program, and a check was presented at the Public Service Board meeting held on December 14th.
El Paso Water Utility employees raised $15,951.68 through fundraising activities including a tennis tournament, karaoke competition, motorcycle run, 4-on-4 basketball game, and a menudo sale. A golf tournament, held at Painted Dunes Desert Golf Course, raised $4,745.40. All fundraising activities were held outside of regular working hours.
“Thanks to the fundraising efforts of the employees of the El Paso Water Utilities, AVANCE-El Paso will now be able to attract additional state funds to continue our vision of creating a world where children and parents advance to their full potential,” said Taylor Moreno, Executive Director. “The funding will be used to help in our expansion efforts of our parenting, early childhood development, and adult literacy classes.”
"These programs are modeled to prepare young children to be successful by educating their parents to become their children's first and primary teacher. By doing so they are able to improve literacy rates among young families," said Armando Renteria, El Paso Water Utilities chief information officer and chair of the fundraising campaign. "I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the board and all the event organizers and participants for all their help in making this year's events a success."
